And now on to today’s question…

.

Love Triangles yes or no?

Brandy Potter

Brandy PotterI don’t like love triangles. It usually means someone is cheating and that doesn’t make a relationship. Now if you have the Best Friend of the opposite sex and boyfriend triangle ala Ducky and Andi in Pretty in Pink that’s cool. Or the Ex and current triangle, I’m good with that, but while they add tension I suppose that they aren’t really triangles.

I don’t mind love triangles but they have to be done well or they just become annoying.

I have seen it done so poorly, so many times… and almost all of the time, I can pick out exactly who will “win out” in the end, so all the hemming and hawing and dithering about is pointless and aggravating, distracting me from whatever else is happening in the story…. So I’m going to say “Hard PASS!” on this one!
.
Actually, there is but one time in media that I’ve ever seen this work out in a way that I truly enjoyed, and that was the love triangle set up between the protagonist, his love interest, and the erstwhile “wildcard” character in the show Grimm. It happened that the protagonist had just been taking the circumstances of his life for granted, so just on the heels of him coming to terms with one dramatic change in his life, the story throws him another curveball as a villain tries to enchant his love interest to both forget about him completely, and be attracted to said “wildcard”…. Whereupon the “wildcard” character actually does the altruistic thing and steps aside to let the protagonist win his girlfriend back! Thus both men could actually maintain good terms, and the protagonist learns to no longer take things like love and relationships for granted… Now, that being said, the show absolutely went sideways and did things between characters that I don’t 100% agree with, but the Love Triangle Incident has always been a moment I thoroughly enjoyed!

I don’t typically read a lot of love triangles, but I’m not opposed to them. I actually can’t remember the last time I read one.

kim writer sideOoh, I quite like love triangles. It makes for a lot of heartbreak and tension. Which lover makes me the best version of myself? Which one supports my dreams? It has to be done right, though. I can’t stand those characters who go back and forth between the two, many times. It seems like they should choose someone completely different.
One of my favorites in the form is Outlander. The main character, Claire, must choose between Jamie, the Highlander from the 18th century, and her husband, Frank.
